Google’s Page discloses voice damage

Larry Page
Google chief executive Larry Page disclosed on Tuesday that he has suffered nerve damage to both his vocal cords, causing his voice to become hoarser and quieter.
Writing on his personal page on the Google Plus social network, he also said he had been diagnosed with a thyroid condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis a decade ago, when he first underwent medical tests over the vocal cord problem.

The disclosure follows a period of leave that Mr Page took from Google in the middle of last year to deal with his voice problems. The company has repeatedly refused to provide further details on the issue, which left him with a severely weakened voice, on the grounds that it was a personal matter.
In his post, Mr Page said that he had first suffered from paralysis of his left vocal cord about 14 years ago, after a bad cold had left him with a hoarse voice. He described the issue as a nerve problem that causes the vocal cord not to move properly and said doctors had been unable to find a cause.
Tests at the time revealed the thyroid condition, he said, adding: “This is a fairly common benign inflammatory condition of the thyroid which causes me no problems.”
Mr Page said that, following another cold last summer, he had been diagnosed with nerve damage resulting in limited movement in his right vocal cord. He stepped back from speaking at public events for a period later in the year.
“Thankfully, after some initial recovery I’m fully able to do all I need to at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before,” Mr Page wrote. “And giving long monologues is more tedious for me and probably the audience.”

How to Set Up a Google+ Page for Your Business

social media how toGoogle+ has opened the doors for business and brand pages.
In this article I show you how to set up your Google+ page and provide examples.
If you haven’t already created a personal Google+ profile for yourself, you’ll need to do that first (you cannot simply sign up a business page from the main Google+ signup screen).
Check out the How to Get Started With Google+ for more on personal Google+ profiles.
If you do have a personal profile, here’s how to create a page for your business.
Visit Create a Page on Google+ to begin, and follow the steps below to get started with Google+ pages.

Pick a category

Google+ Pages - Create a Page
Pick a category for your Google+ page to fall under.
The first step in getting started creating your Google+ page is to choose from the following five main categories.
#1: Local Business or Place
Local Business or Place includes any local business—hotels, restaurants, places, stores or services. If you choose this category, you will be asked for the country in which your business is located and the primary phone number.
If Google finds a matching result in Google Places with your phone number, it will use this information for your Google+ profile. If not, you can add your business info to Google and continue.
Google+ Pages - Local Businesses and Places
Add your local business information to Google+.
#2: Product or Brand
Examples given by Google+ of pages that would fit under Product or Brand include apparel, cars, electronics and financial services.
Google+ Pages - Product and Brand Options
Add your Product or Brand info and choose the most applicable category.
Here, you would enter your page name and website, and choose an applicable category which includes anything from Aerospace and Defense to a Website, or you can simply choose Brand, Other, Product or Service.
#3: Company, Institution or Organization
The next category, Company, Institution or Organization includes pages for companies, institutions, organizations and non-profits or similar entities. Here you also enter your page name and website, and choose an applicable category with the same options as a Product or Brand page, or you can simply choose Company, Institution, Organization or Other.
#4: Arts, Entertainment or Sports
Pages for movies, TV, music, books, sports and shows are considered a good fit for the Arts, Entertainment or Sports section. Again, you will enter your page name and website, and choose an applicable category—this time with options ranging from Album to Website, or you can simply choose Entertainment, Other or Sports.
#5: Other
If you don’t feel your page fits in any of the above-mentioned categories, you can simply select Other, where you can enter your page name and website without any additional narrowing of category selection.
For pages in any category, you must also choose whether your page’s content is suitable for any Google+ user, users 18 or older, users 21 or older or specifically note that the content will be alcohol-related. Then you will tick boxes to opt-in to updates for Google+ pages and agree to terms and conditions to continue.
Google+ Pages - Content Settings
Determine the appropriate age group for your page to be visible to based on content.
Be sure to actually check out the Google+ Additional Terms of Service to see their notes on Authority, Access, Content, Data, Contests and Suspension & Termination.

Customize Your Page’s Public Profile

Once you’ve selected your page’s category, you can start customizing your page’s public profile.
#1: Add Your Profile Photo and Tagline
First, you will be asked to add your tagline (the 10 words that best describe your page) and your page’s profile photo.
Google+ Pages - Tagline and Profile Photo
Add your Google+ page’s tagline and profile photo.
After you have added these items and clicked on Continue, you will be asked to spread the word about your new page through your personal Google+ profile. If you’re not ready yet (which you probably aren’t, since you haven’t completed your profile), click on Finish to be taken to your new page.
#2: Editing Your Page Information
Once you’ve perused your page’s welcome screen, you will want to edit your page’s information. Go to your page’s profile by clicking on the Profile icon at the top, left of the Search Google+ box. Then go to your About tab and Edit Profile.
Google+ Pages - About Your Page Information
Edit information for your profile’s About section.
Here you will be able to click on everything from your page name to your links to enter relevant information about your page within Introduction, Hours (for local businesses or places), Website and Contact Info (phone, email, Skype, etc.). Also be sure to enter additional links to your page in the Introduction section using the Link button and under Recommended Links to link to your other social profiles, blog, blog posts and so on. Keep in mind important keywords for your business – if you are a digital marketing agency, be sure to include digital marketing in your profile.
#3: Adding Your Photostrip
Last but not least when it comes to your Google+ page design is filling in your photostrip. These five photos will be displayed underneath your page’s name and tagline.
Google+ Pages - Adding a Photostrip
Add photos that best represent your page in your photostrip beneath your page name and tagline.
It’s similar to the five photos you can have on your Facebook page. While editing your profile, click on the photo area where it says “add photos here” and upload a photo in each of the five photo spots. You can use different photos that represent your business or creatively cut one photo into five pieces and spread it across the area.
Congratulations! Your Google+ Page Is Ready.
Once your profile is ready, you can start posting to your profile by adding status updates, links, photos and videos just like you do on your personal Google+ profile. I would suggest writing a post or two before you use the “Spread the word” option in your right sidebar to announce your page to your personal profile connections.

Following and Engaging With Your Fans

So what’s the difference between a Google+ page and a Facebook page? The big one I’ve noticed so far is the fact that you can follow your page’s fans back and add them to Circles.
To find out who has added your page to their Circle, you can check your Notifications under Stream in the left sidebar. You can also look under your Circles > People who’ve added you area by clicking on the Circles icon.
Google+ Pages - Adding Fans to Circles
Follow your Google+ page’s fans by moving them into Circles.
In this screen, you can drag your fans into one or more of the four default circles.
  • Team Members—The people you will share the inside scoop with. This could be a great way to share company news with only the people you want to see it.
  • VIPs—Your most loyal customers and closest partners.
  • Customers—All the people or organizations you want to build deeper relationships with. You could possibly use this Circle to send out special discounts and promotions!
  • Following—People you don’t know personally but whose posts you find interesting.
Just as you can with your personal profile, you can also create new Circles.
There are a lot of ways you can successfully use your custom Circles for marketing and messaging, such as creating Circles of fans in a specific location and sharing updates with them about geo-specific offers.
Universities can create Circles for professors, alumni, undergraduate, graduate and prospective students and then share updates with them about news related to their current status with the university. The possibilities are endless.
This also means you can follow your fans’ updates, comment on your fans’ status messages, and +1 their updates as your page. The functionality for a Facebook fan page to interact with a personal profile on Facebook isn’t there, but it is in Google+. Your fans will even see your interaction with their updates in their notifications!
Google+ Pages - Personal Profile Notfications
Google+ users will see your page’s interactions with their profiles in their notifications.
This, in my opinion, is going to be a very powerful way for businesses or brands to communicate with their audiences.
For example, if there is a complaint, the Google+ page can reply publicly on their page, and then privately to the Google+ user by sending a status update directly to them. With Facebook pages, the page can only reply on the wall update but not directly communicate with the Facebook user.

Connecting Your Google+ Page to Your Website

You can connect your website to your Google+ page using the Google+ badge configuration tool. Currently only the icons are available, but official badges are coming soon.
Google+ Pages - Direct Connect
Connecting your Google+ page to your website.
Regardless of whether you want to add a badge to your website, you will want to connect your Google+ page to your website simply for the search benefits.
Google+ Direct Connect will allow visitors to find your Google+ page and add it to their Circles, directly from Google search results. To do this, simply add the following code between the <head> </head> tags on your website.
<link href="{plusPageUrl}" rel="publisher" />
Replace {plusPageUrl} with your Google+ page URL. Then visitors will be able to add your Google+ page to Circles simply through their search results.

Google’s Page Describes Speech Malady, Funds Research

Google Inc. (GOOG) Chief Executive Officer Larry Page disclosed a health condition that can result in hoarse speech and labored breathing, though according to doctors won’t impede him from running the Web-search provider.
Page wrote in a blog post yesterday that he’s been diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis, a condition that restricts vocal-cord movement, and is also experiencing impairment on the right side.

May 14 (Bloomberg) -- For the first time in almost a year, Google CEO Larry Page is publicly addressing a question about his personal health: why he lost his voice and continues to sound hoarse when he speaks. Jon Erlichman reports on Bloomberg Television's "Bloomberg West." (Source: Bloomberg)
The malady can make it hard for the Google co-founder to exercise at peak capacity and limit his participation in some company events, such as quarterly conference calls. He also said that his condition has improved and that he’s able to do all that’s required of him at work and home.
“Usually people with vocal-cord paralysis can find a way to accommodate the vocal injury and still do what they need to do,” said Brian Eldon Petty, a speech-language pathologist at Emory Voice Center in Atlanta.
Google climbed 3.3 percent to close $915.89 in New York, a record high. The stock has advanced 29 percent this year, compared with a 16 percent gain for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.
Page, who also disclosed that he has a thyroid disorder that may play a role in his condition, said he detected impairment in his other vocal cord about a year ago.

‘Fully Able’

“After some initial recovery, I’m fully able to do all I need to do at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before,” he wrote in the post.
The revelations come almost a year after Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told investors that Page would miss several company events, including annual meetings for shareholders and developers, because of his voice condition.
“Now that we’re fully aware of what has gone on here and how it’s affected Larry Page, I can’t imagine it having that much of an impact on his ability to successfully run the company,” said Scott Kessler, an analyst at S&P Capital IQ. “He’s provided more than sufficient information and transparency about these circumstances.”
Cancer, which can in rare instances develop in patients with Page’s type of thyroid disorder, has been ruled out as a cause for Page’s vocal condition, according to people at Google familiar with his treatment over the past year, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public.

‘Very Lucky’

Page said that his ability to exercise strenuously has been “somewhat reduced” because vocal-cord nerve damage can affect breathing. He uses a microphone even for small staff meetings, people familiar with his condition have said.
“My friends still think I have way more stamina than them when we go kite surfing,” he said. “And Sergey says I’m probably a better CEO because I choose my words more carefully. So surprisingly, overall I am feeling very lucky.”
Sergey Brin co-founded Mountain View, California-based Google with Page in 1998.
A patient with vocal-cord paralysis might need regular speech therapy, “particularly in a corporate arena where they have a lot of communicative involvement on an average day,” Petty said, speaking in general terms about the condition.
Beyond that, a surgeon might inject a substance such as Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp.’s Restylane -- an injectable gel that stimulates collagen production -- into the vocal cords to improve speaking ability or perform an operation to reposition the vocal cord, Petty said.

Hashimoto’s Disease

Doctors still don’t know the exact reason for the lasting damage to his voice, Page said. He also has Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation in the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck below the voice box that produces hormones involved in many bodily functions, from breathing to metabolism.
“It is possible that has something to do with it, or that it is just virus related, or some other unknown cause,” Page said.
Hashimoto’s, which typically affects middle-aged women, can be treated with hormone-replacement pills such as Abbott Laboratories (ABT)Synthroid. Very rarely, thyroid cancer may develop, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Vocal-cord paralysis occurs when one or both of the elastic bands of muscle tissue in the voice box fail to open or close properly. Normally functioning vocal folds open when people breathe, close when they swallow, and vibrate to enable speech.

Breathing, Swallowing

The condition can be caused by an injury to the head, neck or chest, by lung or thyroid cancer, or by a viral infection. It can alter the sound of a person’s voice, causing hoarseness, and also lead to difficulties breathing and swallowing.
Paralysis of both vocal cords is rare, according to the NIH. It is also more dangerous, according to Priya Krishna, incoming director of the Voice and Swallow Center at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, who spoke in general terms without referring to any specific patient.
“The danger there is the person’s airway is compromised,” Krishna said. “It’s definitely going to interfere with your energy level. You’re working harder to breathe, so you’re expending your energy you use to walk or talk to breathe.”
When both vocal cords are paralyzed and positioned closely together, a surgeon might perform a procedure known as a tracheotomy, making an incision in the front of the neck and inserting a breathing tube to restore air flow.

Treatment Options

“If they are close together, the person will have trouble breathing, and if they are really far apart, the person will have trouble speaking,” said Michael Benninger, chairman of the Head and Neck Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “You either have no voice or no airway.”
The risk of developing paralyzed vocal cords from two different viruses is exceedingly rare, Benninger said. While paralysis of a single vocal cord may stem from an infection and often clears up, bilateral damage is most often the result of surgery or cancer, he said. The cause is unknown in about 10 percent of cases.
Hashimoto’s disease can also damage the vocal folds, Benninger said. Steroids are sometimes used to reduce inflammation caused by the disease, he said.
Treatment options for vocal-cord paralysis may be tailored to the lifestyle requirements of an individual patient. Entertainers or public figures may prioritize protecting their voice, while athletes might opt for alternatives that preserve aerobic stamina, Benninger said.

Page’s Donation

“Ultimately, it’s the patient’s decision,” Benninger said. “Broadcasters and singers can’t tolerate a breathy voice, while truck drivers may not care if they are a little raspy or hoarse.”
Page is making a donation to fund a “significant research program” into vocal cord nerve function at the Voice Health Institute, which will be led by Steven Zeitels, chief of the Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The donation will be in excess of $20 million, a person familiar with the matter said.
Zeitels has performed vocal-cord surgery on high-profile patients including Grammy-winning pop singer Adele. Zeitels said in a statement that his research team will use Page’s donation to help develop new voice-restoration surgical procedures. He declined to be interviewed about Page’s medical condition.

Google's Page wants a tech Burning Man

Google's CEO wishes for a safe place outside normal society where people can experiment and try new things.

Google CEO Larry Page wants a tech version of the Burning Man temporary community and art event. Page, speaking Wednesday at the Google I/O developers conference, said that societal laws and regulations aren't changing enough to keep up with advancements in technology, and there aren't mechanisms that allow for experimentation. Because of that, he would like a small part of the world outside of normal society where people can experiment and try new things.
"There are many, many exciting and important things we can do but we can't do because they're illegal or not allowed by regulations," Page said. "As technologists we should have safe places where we can try out new things and figure out the effect on society and people without having to deploy into the normal world. People who like those kind of things can go there and experiment." Burning Man is an "annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance" in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Page and other Google executives have been regular Burning Man attendees for years, and the first Google Doodle in 1998 was the Burning Man logo to signal that Page and co-founder Sergey Brin were out in the desert.
Google is hosting its annual developer conference, Google I/O, this week in San Francisco. The online giant has been expected to announce a host of new products and provide more details about other recently announced technology such as Google Glass. Software also has been expected to play a big role, with Google introducing new features for Android and Chrome.
Page on Wednesday made a statement to close Google's keynote event and then took questions from the audience about topics such as the future of the Web, capabilities Google Fiber can enable, and where Google sees sensors going. He also criticized fellow tech companies, such as Microsoft and Oracle, for focusing too much on negativity instead of advancing technology.

Google Page

Google

Google Sites

Google Page

Site settings
Anyone in the world may view this site打勾

T.M.Revolution - resonance
